Make a Map
Materials
Bulletin baord paper
Overhead Projector (two or three would help the lesson go faster)
Transperency of World map for each overhead.
Make copies of the country characteristic worksheet.
Objectives
The objective of this lesson is for the students to make a proportionately
correct wall sized map of the world.
Goals
1. Students should be able to identify all of the continents and
oceans on their world map.
2. Students should understand the concepts of a scale and map
key and be able to make a scale and map key for their wall sized
map.
Make a transperency of the map from the web site for each of the overhead projectors that you can round up. Using a pull down world map, start this lesson by identifying the scale, map key, oceans, and continents on a world map. Assign the kids into as many groups as you have overhead projectors. Give each group or student a student atlas. Give each group a continent to find and trace. Turn on all of the overhead projectors. Students are to trace their continent with the continent'c countries. Use large bulletin board paper and trace out each continent. When the group is finished, the group should cut out the continent. The group should then fill out the worksheet on characteristics of their country. When all groups are finished, have the groups decide as a class where all of the continents should go on the wall to make a wall sized world map. Decide as a class what should be put into the map key. Have a volunteer make a map key.
