Overview of the Project:

Use this project in the classroom as a culminating activity for a unit on Folklore. Students will work together in groups of four or five to create a collection of folklore that represents their newly created, unusual culture. The groups will have six different cultures to choose from or they may create their cultures from scratch. Ultimately, each group will present a description of their culture's people, values, and land from which they will get ideas for their stories.

Each group member is responsible for one type of story. He or she may choose from the following: a creation myth, a tall tale, a fable, or a pourquoi tale (folktale that explains "why")

For the presentation of the groups' cultures, hold a Multicultural Festival. Each group will also be responsible for making a flag, picture, costume, food or other artifact that represents their culture.

Goal of the Project:

To provide an understanding of the different types of folklore & to develop an appreciation for this type of literature

Objectives:This lesson is aligned with the Indiana State Academic Standards

• Students will be able to compare & contrast characteristics of folktales, myths, legends & fables from around the world
  (Indiana standard #2 READING: COMPREHENSION 8th grade Language Arts)
• Students will be able to apply the qualities of these types of folklore to their own writing
  (Indiana standard #5 WRITING: PROCESS 8th Grade Language Arts)
• Students will develop an appreciation for this genre after creating their own cultures & tales which will then be shared with the rest of the class during a presentation
  (Indiana standard #7 SPEAKING & LISTENING 8th grade Language Arts)
