Grade Level: 4-5

Lesson submitted by: Katherine Diehl kdiehl@gjcs.k12.in.us

Time: Depends, could take a couple of class times to finish project

Objective: Students will use the knowledge they have learned about their custom group and create a "project" showing that knowledge.

This Lesson meets the Indiana Academic Standard (Grade 5) in Language Arts: Standard 4: Writing Process

-Students discuss and keep a list of ideas for writing. They use graphic organizers. Students write clear, coherent, and focused essays. Students progress through the stages of the writing process and proofread, edit, and revise writing.

MEETS: 5.4.3, 5.4.5 and 5.4.6

-For more information about the Standards visit www.doe.state.in.us/standards/welcome.html

Project ideas:

The student groups must work together to create at least one of the following:

poster about their custom group

play about their custom group

3-D project about their group

commercial about their custom group

***Every project must show what the students have learned about their group. I am leaving it open-ended so that students can use their creative thinking and problem solving skills to create their projects that represent their custom group.

Here is a Rubric that can be used to assess student work:

5= Excellent

4=Very Good

3=Good

2=Fair

1=Participated

Evaluate each project on the following qualities:

-Originality

-Information about Custom Group

-Eye Appeal (play must be written and turned in)

-Clarity

-How group worked together

Students will share their projects with the class during the next lesson.
