In the beginning of the year in connection with geography and history lessons, tell the class that they will be planning a trip across and around the United States. As a class they will choose thirty cities or regional areas that they would like to visit on their trip.

Assign each student the responsibility for investigating and reporting on an occupation that is more or less characteristic of the city or area being studied. In doing this they should take into consideration such characteristics as location, climate, natural resources, population, modes of transporation available, standard of living, level of education or training required and available, etc.

Student presentations should last between 20 and 40 minutes. Encourage students to use teaching aids such as charts, maps, pictures, and files.
