Regrouping Mixed Numbers when Adding

Regrouping of mixed numbers occurs when you are adding and the fraction ends up being improper. An example is when 1 and 2/3 is added to 5 and 2/3.

The answer of 6and 4/3 has an improper fraction. it must be changed to a mixed number.

Divide 4 by 3. The answer is 1 with a remainder of 1.

This means 4/3 equals 1 and 1/3

The whole number 1 must be added to the 6 giving a total of 7and 1/3..
