Converting improper fractions to Mixed Numbers
A fraction is an improper fraction if the fraction has a larger numerator than denominator.The process of changing an improper fraction to a mixed number is conversion. The numerator should be divided by the denominator. Below are some examples:
Example
1: Change 7/5 to a mixed number
7 need to be divided by 5. The whole number is 1 since 5 goes into 7 one time. The remained is 2. The fracyion left over would be 2/5 since 5 is the divisor.
Example
2: Change 12/8 to a mixed number
12 need to be divided by 8. The whole number is 1 since 8 goes into 12 one time. The remained is 4. The fraction left over would be 4/8 since 8 is the divisor. The fraction 4/8 needs to be reduced.
| 4 | 4 | 1 | ||
| --- | / | --- | = | --- |
| 8 | 4 | 2 |
