Multiplying Simple Fractions with Whole Numbers
Example
1 Simple Fraction Multiplication with Whole Numbers
| 3 |
|
|||
| --- | x | = | --- | |
| 4 |
Before multiplying the numerators and denominators, the whole number must be changed to an improper fraction. To change a whole number to an improper fraction, just put a 1 underneath the whole number.
| 3 | 3 | 9 | ||
| --- | x | --- | = | --- |
| 4 | 1 | 4 |
Then you will have to change your answer to a mixed number. So 9/4 equals 2 and 1/4 when 9 is divided by 4 and the remainder is one.
The answer in simplest form is 2 and 1/4.
