Example 1 Simple Mixed Number Addition

Add the whole numbers 1 and 2. Add the fractions 1/7 and 3/7. You add the numerators. Do not add the denominators.

The fraction 4/7 does not need to be reduced. The answer 3 and 4/7 is reduced and in lowest terms.

Example 2 Simple Mixed Number Addition with Reducing

Add the whole numbers 1 and 2. Add the fractions 1/8 and 3/8. You add the numerators. Do not add the denominators.

The fraction 4/8 must be reduced:

4 4    1
--- ---  =  ---
8 4   2

The final answer will be 3 and 1/2 after you have reduced your fraction
