Objective: Students will correctly figure a batting average.
Indiana Standards: Mathematics #2, #3, and #13
Materials Needed: 1 Baseball Card for Each Student
Procedure:
1) Hand out baseball cards to students
2) Discuss the information found on the back including batting averages
3) Students log onto the computer and visit the Exploring Math in Baseball Web Site
4) Students read the material and figure the averages of the three players
Assessment: Students will be assessed on their ability to correctly figure the batting averages
Lesson Name: Facts Practice
Grade Level: 2-6
Time: 30 minutes
Objective: Students will practice their math facts.
Indiana Standards: Mathematics #1, #4
Materials Needed: Pencl and paper for students (optional)
Procedure:
1) Students go to Funbrain web site
2) Students play the game until a winner is declared
3) Students can work in pairs or by themselves
Assessment: Students will be assessed on their ability to move onto harder problems after each game
Lesson Name: Solving Salary Word Problems
Grade Level: 4-5
Objective: Students will solve word problems using information from a chart on players' salaries.
Indiana Standards: Mathematics #2, #4, #7, #9
Materials Needed: Paper and Pencil
Procedure:
1) Students find the Exploring Math in Baseball Web Page
2) Find link to Salaries page
3) Students then link to Quia quiz page and take quiz
4) Students use information from Salary page to answer questions
Assessment: The students will be assesed based on their score on the Quia quiz
