Many early pioneers traveled to Indiana on the Ohio River. When they reached the river, they would load their wagon, cattle and all of their belongings on a flatboat and float to Indiana. Some built their own flatboat.
Materials Needed
a shallow box
sticks, straws, or cardboard
glue
paint
1. Cut off the top of a box leaving an inch or two of the sides.
2. Make a small log cabin out of sticks, straws, or cardboard. Glue the log cabin into the middle of the box bottom.
3. Make a fence with straws, sticks, or cardboard across one end of the flatboat.
4. Make a tiller of of a pipe cleaner, a stick and some paper.
5. Paint the flatboat.
6. You can make cardboard or pipe cleaner people and animals to put on the flatboat.
