
William Henry Harrison was born at Berkeley, Virginia in 1773.
He served in the American army with 'Mad' Anthony Wayne at the Battle of Fallen Timbers.
He was the first governor of Indiana Territory in 1801 and built a house at Vincennes. He called the house Grouseland because he was so fond of hunting grouse (a type of bird).
In 1811 he led Americans against the Shawnees who were organized by Chief Tecumseh and his brother, The Prophet. Harrison and his men camped near the Tippecanoe River. Tecumseh was away looking for more men to help. The Prophet led the Shawnees. The Americans won the Battle of Tippecanoe.
During the War of 1812 Tecumseh and Harrison met at the Battle of Thames. Tecumseh was killed during this battle.
In 1840, Harrison was elected President of the United States. He delivered a one hour inaugural speech during a cold rain. He caught a cold which turned into pneumonia and he died 1 month later. He had the shortest term of any president.
