Anthony Wayne was born near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on January 1, 1745. He was a surveyor and served with George Washington during the Revolutionary War. Because he was a reckless, risk taker he was given the nickname 'Mad" Anthony Wayne. The Indians called him 'Blacksnake' because he would wait quietly waiting for the right moment to strike.
He led the American troops in a battle against the Miami Indians at the Battle of Fallen Timbers. The battle got that name because a tornado had passed and many trees were blown down. The Miami Indians were organized by Little Turtle. He did not think the Miamis could defeat the American troops at this time and insisted that they should not fight. The Miamis chose another leader , Blue Jacket, to lead them. The Indians were defeated during this battle.
Chief Little Turtle of the Miami Indians. The Treaty of Greenville was signed in 1795. The Indians gave up most of their land in what is now Ohio and southeastern Indiana. They also agreed to leave the settlers in peace.
