Our technology education department is in the process of evolving from traditional Industrial Technology Education to Modular technologies. I began looking into modular technology several years ago and found what you have probably found. The cost is very high and most of us cannot find the money from our corporations to purchase ready-made modules. I decided to develop my own. I am in the process of developing fifteen, two-student modules which will last 5-7days each, depending on class schedules. The number of days per module will depend on the length of your class periods.
Step one is to get your old lab looking new and ready to make the change. Here are some images of the transformation of my lab.
Costs for the lab rennovations were kept to a minimum by doing the construction work myself. The total cost to the corporation for construction materials, paint, and carpet was $3000.00. Total cost of the complete trasformation was $16,000.00 for fifteen modules. How can the total cost for fifteen modules be so low? First, I served on a committee to obtain grants. We received a High-Tech grant from the State. The computers for each module were purchased from this grant. A local furniture industry graciously built and donated the "solid oak" lab furniture. There are many ways to get funding and equipment. All you need to do is ask. You will never know if you don't try.
